Turkey Denounces Israeli Attack on Gaza Aid Flotilla, Calls It “Piracy”
(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Monday strongly condemned Israel’s reported attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters while it was heading toward Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid, describing the incident as “piracy,” according to reports.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Berlin with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Fidan said, “We condemn in the strongest terms this act of piracy, which clearly violates international law. There were participants from around 40 countries on board the vessels. We are in contact with these countries. We are also resolutely continuing the necessary efforts to ensure that our citizens are released as soon as possible,” according to reports.
He stressed that achieving lasting peace and prosperity in the region depends on resolving the Palestinian issue through a two-state framework, which he said lies at the core of ongoing regional instability.
Fidan further argued that Israel’s current policies are the main barrier to peace, accusing it of pursuing “extremist and expansionist policies.” He said the situation in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria reflects a broader pattern of aggression that has now become a global concern.
He also warned that the repercussions of the conflict extend beyond the region, including impacts on Europe through migration pressures and energy security risks, according to reports.
