NATO Commander Says Stronger EU Could Lead to Gradual US Troop Reduction

(MENAFN) NATO’s top military commander in Europe says Tuesday that a stronger European “pillar” within the alliance could pave the way for a gradual reduction of US forces stationed in Europe, according to reports.

Alexus Grynkewich says after a NATO Military Committee meeting that as European allies expand their military capabilities, the United States could begin scaling back its presence on the continent.

He explains that this shift would allow Washington to focus on providing only key capabilities that European members are not yet able to supply themselves.

According to reports, Grynkewich says any future US drawdown would depend on increased European defense spending and progress toward capability goals agreed at NATO summits.

He adds that such changes would happen gradually over several years rather than following a fixed or immediate timetable, emphasizing a long-term restructuring of burden-sharing within the alliance.
