UK Officials Seek Controlled Format for Trump–King Charles Meeting
The meeting is set to take place in the Oval Office, but officials from the United Kingdom have reportedly pushed for journalists to be excluded from the room. The aim, according to the arrangements described, is to prevent any situation that could be seen as politically damaging or embarrassing for either side.
Under the agreed format, the two leaders will participate in a photo opportunity, but their private discussion will not be broadcast or recorded for press coverage. The White House is said to have supported the decision, framing it as a way to avoid what was described as potential reputational risk.
UK officials reportedly want to prevent any scenario resembling a “Zelensky-style clash,” a reference to a previous tense exchange between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a White House meeting in early 2025 that escalated into a public argument in front of reporters.
That earlier incident reportedly involved sharp criticism from Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance, who accused Zelenskyy of insufficient appreciation for US support. Relations between the two sides were later said to have improved following diplomatic intervention from European leaders advising the Ukrainian president on engagement strategy.
Queen Camilla also joined King Charles on the US visit, where the royal couple was photographed alongside Trump and First Lady Melania Trump upon arrival.
The visit takes place shortly after a security incident in Washington involving an armed individual who attempted to breach a high-profile political event. Authorities detained the suspect before he could reach protected areas, and the case remains under investigation, according to reports.
