Iran Accuses US of ‘Piracy’ over Attack on Commercial Ship in Sea of Oman

(MENAFN) Iran’s mission to the United Nations on Tuesday accused the United States of engaging in what it called conduct resembling “piracy” after an Iranian commercial ship was targeted in the Sea of Oman.

In a letter sent to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the presidency of the UN Security Council, the Iranian mission said US military forces carried out what it described as a hostile and unlawful attack on the vessel identified as Toska near Iran’s coastline.

On 19 April 2026, in the vicinity of the coasts of Iran in the Sea of Oman, U.S. military forces carried out a hostile and unlawful attack against the Iranian commercial vessel 'Toska,' according to the letter.

Iran said the incident represents a serious violation of international law and accused US forces of using coercion and intimidation that endangered the crew and their families. It added that the psychological pressure on those aboard further intensified the severity of the situation.

“The deliberate intimidation and psychological terror inflicted upon the crew and their families further compound the egregious nature of this act,” the letter said.

Tehran argued that the attack constitutes “a clear and material breach of the ceasefire of 8 April 2026” and described it as an act of aggression under UN definitions relating to attacks on another state’s vessels.

The Iranian mission urged the immediate release of the ship, its crew, and their families, and called on the UN Security Council to formally condemn the incident and ensure accountability.

It also warned that the episode could further destabilize already tense regional conditions and threaten the safety of international shipping routes, describing it as a dangerous escalation in maritime security.
