Durov Slams WhatsApp Privacy Claims, Highlights Telegram Security
In a series of posts shared on Sunday, Durov challenged WhatsApp’s claim that it offers “end-to-end encryption by default,” calling the statement “a giant consumer fraud.” He argued that in many cases, private messages may still be stored as plain-text data in cloud backups managed by major tech providers.
He further claimed that WhatsApp retains metadata such as who users communicate with and suggested that cloud-stored backups could be accessed by third parties under certain conditions.
“Add the fact that WhatsApp stores and discloses who you chat with, and the picture is dire,” he wrote, adding that Apple and Google reportedly provide stored data to external entities multiple times each year.
In a separate exchange with a user who said they only share sensitive images through Telegram, Durov replied: “Thanks for the trust – your nudes are safe with us.”
Despite these claims, Telegram’s own documentation shows that end-to-end encryption is not enabled by default. Only its “Secret Chats” feature provides full end-to-end encryption, while standard conversations are stored on Telegram’s cloud servers. Security analysts have long noted that cloud-based storage can create potential vulnerabilities, particularly when data may be subject to legal requests or security breaches.
According to reports, the exchange highlights ongoing debate within the tech industry over the strength and transparency of messaging app encryption models and how companies communicate privacy protections to users.
