Iran Blames US for Collapse of Islamabad Talks After Near Agreement

(MENAFN) Abbas Araghchi has accused the United States of undermining diplomatic progress during recent negotiations held in Islamabad, claiming that an agreement was close before talks collapsed.

In a statement, he said that Iran entered discussions with the United States “in good faith” in an effort to bring an end to the conflict, according to reports.

He added that the parties were reportedly “just inches away” from finalizing what was referred to as an “Islamabad MoU” before encountering what he described as “maximalism, shifting goalposts and a blockade” from the US side. He also stated that “good will begets good will. Enmity begets enmity.”

The comments followed the conclusion of the latest round of Iran–US negotiations in Islamabad, which ended without an agreement despite multiple rounds of discussion and exchanged proposals. Mediated by Pakistan, the talks reportedly failed to resolve key disagreements, leaving both sides signaling the need for further diplomatic engagement.

The diplomatic breakdown came shortly after United States Central Command announced that it would begin enforcing a maritime blockade on vessels entering and exiting Iranian ports, while allowing transit through the Strait of Hormuz for ships not bound for Iranian ports.

According to reports, the negotiations are part of broader international efforts to end a wider conflict involving Iran and Israel, which escalated on February 28 before a fragile ceasefire was later established. The Islamabad talks followed earlier diplomatic rounds aimed at stabilizing the situation, but ultimately ended without a breakthrough.
