Short Easter Truce Between Russia, Ukraine Concludes
According to reports, both Moscow and Kyiv accused each other of breaking the ceasefire almost immediately after it began at 4 p.m. Moscow time (1300 GMT), with each side reporting large numbers of drone strikes and artillery shelling during the short-lived pause.
Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that it recorded 1,971 alleged violations of the truce by Ukrainian forces overnight, according to its official statement. On the other hand, Ukraine’s General Staff claimed it documented 7,696 violations from the beginning of the ceasefire until 10 p.m. Sunday, as stated by reports.
Independent verification of these competing claims remains difficult due to the ongoing war, which has now entered its fifth year since escalating in February.
The ceasefire was first announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, who instructed military leadership to prepare for its implementation while warning that any Ukrainian provocation would prompt a response.
Shortly before the truce began, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine would participate in the initiative and respond in kind, indicating a reciprocal approach to maintaining the temporary pause in hostilities.
