WHO Warns Conflict in Iran Disrupts Hospitals, Medical Staff
Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated Tuesday that explosions near Motahari Hospital in Tehran caused structural damage to parts of the building and led to the evacuation of both patients and healthcare workers on March 1.
“Health facilities, staff and patients are being affected amid the ongoing conflict in Iran,” Tedros said on the US social media company X.
He further noted that two emergency medical centers located in the cities of Sarab and Hamedan were also hit, with reports indicating that at least two healthcare workers were injured in the incidents.
Emphasizing the essential role of medical institutions during periods of unrest, Tedros underscored the need to shield them from harm. “During times of crisis, hospitals and clinics are needed more than ever,” he said. “This is why it is imperative to ensure their protection at all times.”
The WHO chief also called on all sides engaged in the conflict to prioritize the safety of healthcare infrastructure and personnel. “I again urge all parties to prevent health facilities, workers and patients from becoming casualties of the conflict,” he said.
The warning comes as regional tensions have intensified following large-scale military strikes launched Saturday by the United States and Israel against Iran. The attacks have reportedly resulted in nearly 800 deaths, including Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, along with senior military figures.
