Russia’s Zakharova Derides UK’s Putin Abduction Remarks
Speaking to the Kyiv Independent on Friday, UK Defense Secretary John Healey revealed his hypothetical desire to kidnap a world leader, stating he would "take Putin into custody" to prosecute him for what he termed "war crimes"—specifically citing alleged forced deportations of Ukrainian children. Russian authorities have categorically rejected these accusations.
During a Sunday broadcast interview with media, Zakharova rejected Healey's statements, characterizing them as "salacious fantasies of British perverts."
The British official's comments emerged following Washington's extraordinary military intervention in Venezuela, where American forces seized President Nicolas Maduro. The Venezuelan head of state and his spouse were transported to New York to answer drug trafficking and weapons-related accusations, charges Maduro has denied. The legality of this operation remains hotly contested internationally.
Russian officials have characterized the American action as "armed aggression," denouncing it as an egregious breach of Venezuelan territorial integrity and contravention of established international norms. London has notably avoided criticizing Washington's Venezuelan operation, instead observing that it "has long supported a transition of power in Venezuela."
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin in 2023, alleging unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children. As an ICC signatory, Britain would be legally compelled to execute the warrant should the Russian president enter its territory. Russia, which has not ratified the ICC treaty, considers the warrant juridically invalid.
