Iran Protests Embassy Flag Incident
The episode unfolded on Saturday when members of the Iranian diaspora gathered outside the Kensington embassy to express support for demonstrations in Iran. One activist scaled the wall, removed the Islamic Republic’s flag, and hoisted the pre-1979 royal banner – featuring a lion and Sun – from the balcony above the main entrance.
The royal-era symbol is frequently used by Iranians abroad to oppose the current Islamic government. The embassy later reinstated the official flag, posting on X: “Iran’s flag is flying high.”
The ambassador was summoned after “the Iranian Embassy in London was disrespected by displacing the Iranian flag,” a semi-official news agency reported, citing the Foreign Ministry. Alireza Yousefi, director-general for Western Europe at the ministry, delivered a “strong protest” to the UK representative.
However, the UK Foreign Office rejected claims that Ambassador Hugo Shorter was formally summoned, with a media outlet quoting sources who said he merely “had a meeting” at the ministry. London police confirmed arrests were made for aggravated trespass and assault on an emergency worker during the incident.
