Mosque in UK Gets Targeted in Suspected Hate Crime
(MENAFN) Authorities in the southern region of England have launched an investigation into what they are treating as a hate-driven arson assault on a mosque located in the seaside town of Peacehaven, East Sussex.
The incident occurred on Saturday night, prompting an emergency response after reports of a blaze at the property on Phyllis Avenue.
According to police, surveillance footage captured two individuals wearing face coverings and dark apparel as they approached the mosque’s entrance.
They were seen dousing the doorway with a flammable substance before igniting it.
Firefighters responded swiftly and managed to bring the fire under control. Thankfully, no one inside the building sustained injuries.
However, the mosque itself, along with a vehicle parked nearby, suffered extensive damage.
Sussex Police have issued images of the two suspects in hopes of identifying them. One of the individuals was seen wearing a distinctive black coat with a “Pre London” logo visible on the front. The other person was noted for wearing striking red gloves.
Detective Inspector Gavin Patch condemned the event as “an appalling and reckless attack which we know will have left many people feeling less safe.”
He further stated that the department is classifying the case as “an arson with intent to endanger life” and appealed to the public for any leads that might aid in the investigation.
