Myanmar’s Election Commission Excludes Constituencies from Voting

(MENAFN) Myanmar’s election body has declared that balloting will not occur in several districts during the upcoming nationwide election, according to an official statement released Monday by a state-run news agency.

The Union Election Commission (UEC) confirmed that the December polls will be canceled in 56 Pyithu Hluttaw (Upper House) districts, nine Amyotha Hluttaw (Lower House) districts, and 56 regional or state parliamentary districts.

The authority explained the move by stating that "these constituencies have been deemed not conducive to holding free and fair elections in the multiparty democratic general election," citing security and fairness concerns.

Many of the excluded constituencies are reported to be under the influence of insurgent groups.

Back in August, the commission declared that the "multi-party democratic general election" would be held on Sunday, December 28 of this year.

The most recent general election in the Buddhist-majority Southeast Asian nation took place in November 2020, when the National League for Democracy (NLD), under the leadership of imprisoned Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, secured victory. However, the elected government was removed following a military takeover in February 2021.

This new election announcement follows the junta’s decision in July to establish a commission to supervise the vote, which was seen as a signal toward ending the prolonged state of emergency.
