Death Numbers from Nepal Protests Increase
(MENAFN) The death toll from violent demonstrations in Nepal has risen to 31 as discussions continue over forming an interim government following unrest that toppled Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s administration, local media outlets reported on Thursday.
The Forensic Medicine Department at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, where the bodies of protesters have been brought for postmortem examinations, has preliminarily identified 25 victims so far.
The identities of the remaining six deceased, including one woman, remain unknown, according to a local English daily.
On Thursday morning, Nepalese soldiers opened fire to halt a prison breakout, killing at least two inmates and injuring more than a dozen.
The most recent escape attempt took place in the Ramechhap district of Bagmati province, where prisoners broke through multiple internal locks and tried to force open the main gate before security forces intervened.
The prison houses over 300 inmates.
Authorities confirmed that the situation is now under control, and no prisoners were able to flee.
Nepal has experienced several jailbreaks amid the violent protests, with around 15,000 inmates reportedly escaping over the past few days.
The army has taken command of national security after "Generation Z" protests led to Oli’s resignation.
