London Faces Travel Chaos as Strike Disrupts Underground Services
(MENAFN) London is bracing for major travel chaos this week as approximately 10,000 underground train drivers initiated a strike over pay and working conditions, severely disrupting the city’s transport network.
The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union called the strike, which began late Sunday and is set to continue through Thursday, intensifying the impact on daily commuters across the capital.
Transport for London (TfL) has urged the union to reconsider, warning that the ongoing strike would leave "little to no Tube service" available throughout the week. In a statement released before the action commenced, TfL said, "We call on the RMT to suspend this action, put our fair and affordable offer to their members and continue discussions with us."
Despite the Tube disruptions, London Overground and national train services remain operational without interruption.
The dispute centers on the RMT’s demand for a 32-hour workweek, while TfL has proposed a 3.4% pay increase but stated that reducing the current contractual 35-hour week "is neither practical nor affordable."
