Tropical Storm Tapah Makes Landfall in China, Forces Evacuations

(MENAFN) Tropical Storm Tapah made landfall in Guangdong province, China, on Monday morning, triggering widespread disruptions, including school closures, mass evacuations, and major flight cancellations in the region.

According to Chinese media, 182 schools in the city of Taishan suspended classes, while over 41,000 residents in Jiangmen were relocated to safer areas as the storm passed through. The province also faced heavy rainfall and gusty winds, further complicating the situation.

In the meantime, Taiwanese media reported that dozens of flights between Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau were canceled as Tapah moved through the South China Sea. The storm, the 16th typhoon of the year, originated late Saturday to the west of the Philippines and is currently tracking northwest at 20 km (12 miles) per hour, weakening as it progresses.

Though Tapah's path will not directly impact Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration has warned of residual effects. The Taiwan Airport Authority anticipates up to 100 flight cancellations on Monday, with many other flights experiencing significant delays.
