WHO Reports Malnutrition Killed 148 Palestinians in Gaza
At a UN briefing in Geneva, Richard Peeperkorn, WHO’s representative in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, described the health crisis in Gaza as “dire,” highlighting the severe toll hunger is taking on the population.
He reported that by August 5, 2025, 148 Palestinians had died due to malnutrition. This includes 98 adults and 49 children, with 39 of those children under the age of five.
Peeperkorn stressed the alarming rise in child malnutrition, revealing that nearly 12,000 children aged five and under suffered from acute malnutrition in July alone—the highest monthly figure recorded so far.
The healthcare infrastructure is also critically strained. Only 50% of hospitals and 38% of primary health care centers in Gaza remain partially operational, he said.
Adding to the severity of the crisis, Peeperkorn noted that 52% of medicines and 68% of consumables are currently out of stock, highlighting critical shortages of vital medical supplies.
Hospitals are also overwhelmed by injuries sustained in food distribution areas. Peeperkorn warned that these incidents have led to ongoing shortages of blood and plasma.
He highlighted the growing human cost of accessing food aid, stating that the death toll among individuals seeking food supplies has climbed sharply, reaching 1,655 fatalities with over 11,800 reported injuries since May 27 this year.
