AU Hails France’s Move to Recognize Palestine
In a statement released over the weekend, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf stated that French President Emmanuel Macron’s declaration of intent “aligns with the longstanding position of the African Union.”
Youssouf noted that the AU reaffirmed its position earlier this year during the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly, held in February at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The summit, which gathered leaders from across the continent, emphasized “Africa's collective commitment to the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and statehood.”
Describing France's move as "a significant step toward a just, lasting, and comprehensive solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, grounded in international law and relevant United Nations resolutions."
Reiterating the AU's firm backing of a two-state solution, he emphasized the goal of Israelis and Palestinians living peacefully and securely side by side. Youssouf also urged other nations to take similar action in support of “the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.”
President Macron announced on Thursday that France will formally recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for September.
