Boat Overturn Claims 25 Lives in Nigeria

(MENAFN) At least 25 fatalities have been confirmed after a passenger boat overturned on a river in Nigeria’s Niger state, according to reports from media outlets on Sunday.

The vessel, transporting marketgoers from the Munya region, went down in the Shiroro area, with initial accounts indicating dozens of passengers remain unaccounted for.

Officials have launched search and rescue missions, cautioning that the death toll may rise as efforts continue.

An official involved in the response, who declined to disclose the total number of people aboard, confirmed ongoing attempts to find and assist those still missing.

Boat disasters are a common occurrence in Nigeria during the rainy season, especially on waterways frequently used for travel such as rivers and lakes.
