Poll Reveals Drop in Merz’s Public Confidence

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has faced a significant decline in public approval over the past month.

A recent survey carried out by the INSA institute indicates that 56% of respondents now disapprove of his performance.

Fewer than one-third of those surveyed expressed continued satisfaction with his leadership.

Back in early June, Merz enjoyed a support rate of 36%, while 45% of the population expressed criticism of his actions, according to a German tabloid that commissioned the study.

The current poll also highlights diminishing support for the ruling coalition, which comprises Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democrats.

The data suggests that nearly 60% of German citizens are now dissatisfied with the coalition’s governance, a considerable increase from just 44% in early June.

If national elections were held this weekend, the CDU would secure only 27% of the vote, while the Social Democrats would obtain just 15%, according to figures provided by INSA.

These numbers suggest that the coalition would no longer hold a parliamentary majority.

The poll also shows that Germany’s most favored opposition group – the right-leaning Alternative for Germany (AfD) – trails the CDU by only three percentage points, further signaling a shift in public sentiment.

Since assuming office in May, Merz has pursued a strict foreign policy approach regarding Russia.

Berlin, one of Kiev’s key supporters, has committed €5 billion ($5.6 billion) toward the production of long-range weaponry in Ukraine.

The chancellor has not dismissed the possibility of sending missiles capable of reaching Moscow.

Earlier this month, Merz stated that all diplomatic paths to resolve the conflict in Ukraine were “exhausted.”
