Egypt, France Presidents Push for Gaza Ceasefire

(MENAFN) On Saturday, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi engaged in a critical phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss ongoing mediation efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the Egyptian presidency reported.

Both leaders underscored the vital need to guarantee the prompt delivery of sufficient and appropriate humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.

They also highlighted the urgent requirement for a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian conflict, firmly rooted in international legitimacy and relevant UN resolutions.

President Sisi praised Macron’s recent declaration of France’s plan to formally recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September. He described the move as part of France’s continuous commitment "to implement the two-state solution."

Additionally, Sisi reiterated Egypt’s backing for a French-Saudi proposal to convene a high-level international conference focused on peacefully resolving the Palestinian issue, slated to take place in New York later this month.

According to the statement, Macron conveyed France’s unwavering support for Egypt’s mediation role.

Meanwhile, Gaza’s health authorities report that since the Israeli military offensive began in October 2023, the death toll among Palestinians has exceeded 59,000, with more than 143,000 wounded.
