Kremlin Blames Kyiv, West for Russia-Ukraine Dialogue Breakdown
In an interview with a Russian state news agency, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the prospects for Moscow-Kyiv relations after the current conflict as “too theoretical a question right now.”
“First, we need to settle the problem, and we need to record the fulfillment of the tasks that the special military operation faced,” Peskov said, referencing Russia’s term for the war in Ukraine, now entering its fourth year.
Peskov emphasized that Moscow would prefer to achieve its “operation” goals through diplomatic channels but claimed these efforts have been obstructed. He argued that Russia is compelled to continue its current course “in conditions when these means have become impossible, when all proposals for dialogue have been rejected, both by Ukraine itself and by Westerners.”
He reiterated that a diplomatic resolution remains the “preferred” path for Russia.
“But first, we need to settle the situation, and then think about how relations will be built,” he added.
Kyiv has yet to respond to Peskov’s remarks, though Ukrainian officials have frequently accused Moscow of deliberately delaying negotiations, accusations Russia has denied.
These statements come as Russia and Ukraine conducted their third renewed round of peace talks on Wednesday evening in Istanbul, resulting in a significant agreement to exchange at least 1,200 prisoners from each side.
Prior to this, two direct negotiation sessions were held in Türkiye on May 16 and June 2.
