South Korea, Japan Vow Stable Relations

(MENAFN) South Korea’s new Foreign Minister Cho Hyun conducted his inaugural phone discussion Thursday with Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi, according to a statement from the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

Both officials reaffirmed their dedication to "continue to progress the Japan-South Korea relations stably," underscoring the importance of steady diplomatic engagement between the neighboring countries.

Iwaya conveyed readiness to collaborate "closely together on issues regarding North Korea including the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue," highlighting security as a critical shared priority.

Cho stressed the pivotal role Japan-South Korea relations play, calling the partnership a fundamental element of the government’s pragmatic diplomatic approach, which also includes trilateral cooperation with the United States, as reported by media.

In separate developments, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung held multiple calls on Thursday with key global leaders: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, and Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

During his conversation with Merz, Lee focused on strengthening bilateral ties.

In discussions with Mirziyoyev, Lee exchanged views on boosting the "special strategic partnership" between South Korea and Uzbekistan and improving overall relations. Lee urged the Uzbek president to address challenges faced by South Korean businesses operating in Uzbekistan.

Lee and Kristersson agreed to deepen "friendly and cooperative relations across a wide range of areas including the economy, defense and defense industry, and culture," Lee noted on X.

With Tokayev, Lee emphasized the necessity of elevating the strategic partnership to a more advanced stage and requested support for South Korean companies aiming to expand in Kazakhstan.

Additionally, South Korea confirmed that one of its military aircraft entered Japanese airspace earlier this month due to a diversion, prompting Tokyo to dispatch a fighter jet for investigation.
