Turkish FM says Ukraine-Russia are getting closer to peace

(MENAFN) Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan described the latest round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul as an important advancement toward ending the ongoing conflict. He stressed that “every new achievement brings the sides one step closer to peace.”

Following the third direct talks hosted by Turkey, Fidan revealed that both parties agreed on a prisoner swap involving at least 1,200 individuals each, alongside new measures for returning civilians, including children.

“We observed with satisfaction that the negotiations are moving in a more constructive and result-oriented direction,” he said, emphasizing Turkey’s role as a mediator in the process.

Fidan added that the delegations discussed concrete steps to push forward technical talks on establishing a ceasefire and agreed on the formation of joint working groups focused on political, humanitarian, and military issues.

“Another brick has been laid in the construction of a joint will toward a solution,” he stated. “Negotiations must be conducted with patience. The support and interest shown by the international community to the Istanbul meetings also reflect the global yearning for peace.”

Ukraine’s lead negotiator, Rustem Umerov, expressed gratitude to Turkey for its facilitation and mentioned Kyiv’s proposal to hold a presidential-level meeting by late August. He also indicated Ukraine’s willingness to consider a ceasefire without any preconditions.

On the Russian side, negotiator Vladimir Medinsky confirmed the agreement on prisoner exchanges and suggested short-term ceasefires to evacuate injured soldiers and recover the remains of the fallen.

Medinsky added that Moscow reviewed a list of Ukrainian children eligible for repatriation and showed openness to continuing the talks with a potential fourth round.
