UNSC Approves Peaceful Conflict Resolution Methods

(MENAFN) In a unified decision on Tuesday, the UN Security Council approved a resolution that calls on all member nations to make use of existing frameworks aimed at resolving conflicts through non-violent means.

This action reiterates the foundational values laid out in the Charter of the United Nations.

All 15 council members cast votes in favor of the motion, which was introduced by Pakistan.

The resolution specifically "urges all member states to utilize effectively the mechanisms for pacific settlement of disputes as outlined in Article 33 of the United Nations Charter, including negotiation, enquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial settlement, resort to regional agencies or arrangements, or other peaceful means of their own choice."

Additionally, it "expresses its determination to recommend the use of these mechanisms, as appropriate," and "expresses its readiness to utilize the mechanism of investigation provided" in the UN Charter.

The Council emphasized the importance of member states taking "necessary measures for the effective implementation of Security Council resolutions for peaceful settlement of disputes."

Further, the resolution appeals to regional and sub-regional bodies to "enhance their efforts for peaceful settlement of disputes, consistent with the United Nations Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions."

It also urges member nations to encourage and reinforce collaboration between these organizations and the UN.

Lastly, the resolution asks UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to submit "concrete recommendations for further strengthening the mechanisms for peaceful settlement of disputes" within one year of the resolution’s passage.

These suggestions should be delivered during a specific briefing and through standard reporting procedures.
