Ukraine attempts to bypass US arms freeze
Earlier this week, US media outlets revealed that deliveries of critical military supplies to Kiev — including Patriot missile interceptors, GMLRS rockets, Hellfire missiles, and 155mm artillery shells — had been paused. NBC noted that some shipments had already arrived in Europe but were being withheld from transfer to Ukrainian forces.
US officials later confirmed the suspension, framing it as part of Washington’s “America first” policy to preserve stockpiles for its own defense needs.
According to Politico, Ukraine was “blindsided” by the freeze and is now urging the US to allow European nations to purchase American arms on Kiev’s behalf. “We don’t have a choice,” a Ukrainian official told the outlet. Several European countries are reportedly considering such deals, though US approval would still be necessary, potentially complicating the process with further negotiations.
Export restrictions on US-made weapons are another obstacle. Even under the previous Biden administration, British shipments of Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine were initially delayed due to American components, Politico noted. Ukrainian officials believe these issues could be resolved in ongoing talks, though Washington’s final position remains unclear.
Politico also reported that President Donald Trump’s administration appears more open to direct arms sales to Ukraine. During a recent meeting with President Vladimir Zelensky at the NATO summit in the Netherlands, Trump was said to have shown “compassion” and “understanding,” though no concrete promises were made.
Frustration in Kiev is growing. Ukrainian MP Mariana Bezuglaya declared that Ukraine no longer considers the US an ally, and Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry summoned US chargé d’affaires John Ginkel to stress the urgency of continued military support.
Russia, meanwhile, continues to condemn Western arms shipments to Ukraine, arguing they only prolong the conflict without changing its eventual outcome.
