French Authorities Probe X Over Alleged Illegal Activities
(MENAFN) The Paris prosecutor's office revealed on Friday that French police are investigating the social media platform X for potentially illegal activities.
At the heart of the investigation, X faces allegations of two primary offenses: “impairing the operation of an automated data processing system by an organized group” and “fraudulently extracting data from an automated data processing system by an organized group,” according to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau in an official statement.
The investigation has been delegated to the Directorate-General of the National Gendarmerie (DGGN), Beccuau confirmed.
This inquiry follows formal complaints filed in January, one by a member of the French parliament and the other by a senior official within a French public institution. Both complaints accuse X’s algorithm of being exploited to facilitate foreign interference.
Beccuau confirmed that the Paris prosecutor's office initiated a review of these complaints in February. Subsequently, on Friday, the office declared the launch of a formal investigation, citing findings from verifications, contributions from French researchers, and data from several public institutions as the foundation for the inquiry.
In response, Laurent Buanec, CEO of X France, took to the platform in January to defend its practices. He assured users that X “has strict, clear, and public rules aimed at protecting the platform from hate speech.” He further emphasized that the platform “fights disinformation,” and that its algorithm was specifically designed to prevent the promotion of harmful content.
