PKK Group Kicks Off Disarmament Process in Northern Iraq
The militants, who had been hiding in a cave within the region, emerged with their weapons before moving to a designated site for the disarmament process. There, they disposed of their arms by throwing them into a large, burning cauldron, signaling the end of their active participation in the group's violent operations.
A senior PKK figure read a statement in both Turkish and Kurdish, officially marking the dissolution of their military activities. The disarmament ceremony was witnessed by a variety of officials, including representatives from Türkiye's National Intelligence Organization, Iraqi security forces, the Kurdish Regional Government, and members of the Turkish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). Additionally, non-governmental organization representatives and media members were present at the site.
The disbanding of this group follows a decision made by the PKK leadership in May to dissolve and lay down their arms. This move came after a February statement from imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, who called for the cessation of the group’s 40-year armed campaign against Türkiye.
Since its inception, the PKK, designated as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the U.S., and the EU, has been responsible for over 40,000 deaths, including civilians, women, children, and the elderly. The group has long used northern Iraq, near the Turkish border, as a base for planning attacks against Türkiye.
