Peace March begins to honor Srebrenica genocide martyrs
The participants will cover the 100-kilometer (62-mile) journey over three days toward Potocari, retracing the route Bosniaks took three decades ago while trying to escape to safer areas in Tuzla or Kladanj. This year’s march is led by survivors of the massacre.
The marchers are expected to reach Potocari on July 10, in time for a collective funeral the following day at the Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial Center. There, the remains of seven newly identified victims of the genocide will be laid to rest.
This marks the 21st iteration of the Peace March, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the atrocity committed in the UN-designated “safe zone” of Srebrenica.
For those who survived, the march serves both as a way to heal from past trauma and as a duty to pass on the stories of what happened to younger generations.
Among the attendees is Ademir Mesic, participating for the 14th time, who remarked that it remains emotionally challenging each year to walk the route and listen to the experiences of those who endured the tragedy.
